Scammer Targeting Overseas Students in Australia

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) today warned international students to be aware of individuals impersonating departmental officers seeking payment for alleged breaches of their visa conditions.

The scammers are targeting overseas students in Australia who have limited working rights as part of their visa conditions.

Some students, the department has been told, have received “fine notices” demanding payment of thousands of dollars for unlawfully working above 40 hours a fortnight.

The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship the Hon Chris Bowen MP, now invites the Australian public to provide their views and ideas on the size and composition of Australia’s Humanitarian Program for 2013-14.

Australia operates a Humanitarian Program, which offers resettlement for refugees and others in humanitarian need and protection for people already in Australia who are determined to be refugees.
